So this is another puppy post… But a much needed one! The mudroom is still coming along but in the last couple of weeks, Howie has been climbing over his old gate and roaming the house while we have been gone. Although we got him climbing over it on video and it’s hilarious, we needed to come up with a better gate now that he is bigger. This new one will hopefully not be used for too long. But for the time being while we still don’t trust him alone, this one looks nicer and will actually keep him blocked off in the mudroom when we are gone.
We went with the good old barn door-looking style. It is made out of 1/2” mdf. We cut the mdf to 39 1/2” x 33” so it is wide enough to fit inside the mudroom door and tall enough to keep Howie from being able to get over it.
We didn’t want this to take much time or effort since we could only end up using this for a couple of months so we kind of cheated the “barn door” look of pieces of wood together. We used the single piece of mdf and just ran in through the table saw, cutting a groove every 3 inches on both sides to make it look like separate boards.
Then we cut border pieces to go along the outside of both sides and the pieces for the “X” out of the ¼” x 4″ pine. These pieces are attached with glue and nails. We filled all the gaps with bondo.
Once that dried, we added a top piece along the top and then sanded all of the border pieces and “X” before painting. We did one coat of primer and needed 2 coats of Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint in “Orgami White.”
The gate is attached to the wall with small hinges and we got a small latch/lock as well but we haven’t needed to attach that yet and are hoping we won’t need it so it is one less hole to fill in the wall when we stop using the gate altogether.
It’s not the prettiest thing in the doorway but it’s a “nice-ish” dog gate that performs it’s function while we need it! Thanks again for stopping by 🙂
